Sigiriya & Dambulla

Sigiriya Rock

Enriched with flavors of history, immersed in immense holistic significance, a tour to Sri Lanka is inconceivable without visiting the dramatic destination of Sigiriya. Carved out of a single rock, Sigiriya is a majestic stone that bears the evidence of an ancient civilization. As you ascend the spiral stairways to reach the top, learn about the history of Sigiriya, how it was founded during the reign of King Kassapa I and the mysteries behind the great rock.
But is Sigiriya merely a giant stone? No! The secrets of the big rock are exposed as you make the climb. Though intimidating at first, the walk up to the top is not as difficult as it looks. On your way, appreciate the striking frescos and a pair of lions paws carved out of a rock. For artists and architects, this climb is a sheer joy as it unveils the creative gem of the bygone era. The mirrored walls which reflect the sunlight and are filled with graffiti is another delight. Sigiriya is surrounded by water gardens, peaceful shrines and also has a museum. After the hike up to the top, soak in the picturesque view that makes the struggle worth it.

Dambulla Caves

The next stop for the day is Dambulla. Feel free to spend some time observing the wholesale vegetable markets which house almost every vegetable, including a handful of exotic ones. Walking along the narrow lanes, you can learn about Dambulla’s heritage, and finally, make way to the iconic Dambulla Caves. The famous caves include five separate caves under a single overhanging rock. The arched colonnades welcome you into an intricately decorated interior that holds some of the best Buddha figurines and paintings. Apart from images of Lord Buddha, you can also find religion art along the walls of the cave. The magnificent decorum of the caves are indeed breathtaking, and a must visit in Sri Lanka.

Both Dambulla caves and Sigiriya rock includes short hikes. However, the stairs are not steep and the serene surroundings make the walk one without weary. It’s an easily doable tour for families, kids, and adults. In the case of critical walking prohibitions, an advice of medical personnel is solicited.
