In Sri Lanka the Wellness & Spa trend does not have a long tradition. It’s a concept more in line with Western lifestyles centering around wellness, health, and beauty. But because of the demand from western tourists, more and more hotels offer a spa center with a mushrooming number of treatments and therapies.
Spas originate in the traditions of ancient Rome, where they had public bathhouses, called thermea, stemming from the Greek word for warm (thermos). Roman men and women visited the bathhouse every day to bathe, following a specific path inside, taking baths in cold, lukewarm and hot water, and then in the reverse order. After bathing, their skin was rubbed with etheric, essential oils and then scraped, since soap did not exist yet, and in some bathhouses there was a depilator and a masseuse available. Some of these bathhouses also had gardens for sports and games, an open air swimming pool, and a sauna. The bathhouses were used to bathe but also for therapeutic reasons, for instance to alleviate arthritis, eye and skin problems.
